What is a VPN?

VPN (Virtual Private Network) — Is a technology that changes and hides your IP address and encrypts all the incoming and outgoing data while you use the Internet. This way you gain anonymity and are safe as no one can see what you are doing while surfing the web.

From your perspective, being one of the numerous "Instant VPN" clients, VPN is the technology that allows you to connect to our servers in Europe or America and get the possibility to use remote network resources as like you are there. In other words "Instant VPN" invites you to nestle in our European or American networks, obtaining a European or American IP address on your computer. Simply install our configure the VPN connection, enter your username and password and click the connect button!

How does your VPN service work?

Once you connect to our service, a secure internet connection is established between your internet service provider and our internet service provider. Everything you do online is 'encrypted' and essentially anonymous; anyone trying to break into your internet connection to steal sensitive data (e.g. on public Wifi networks) will not be able to because your web traffic is securely hidden. Websites you visit, usernames and passwords used to login to websites, people you talk to online, and files you download and share will be out of sight by third-parties trying to monitor your online usage and potentially steal sensitive information from you.Not only is your online traffic anonymous, your online identity in the form of an 'IP address' is also hidden. Your IP address is essentially your 'online fingerprint' and identification to the rest of the online world. Your IP address can tell people and websites your physical location, which internet service provider you are using and much more. You wouldn't show your identity to a random person in the street, so why would you reveal your online identity and location to potentially millions of online strangers?

Our VPN service is very easy to use, while VPN encryption may sound complicated to some people, you do not need technical knowledge to anonymize your online traffic and protect your online identity. All you need to do is configure the VPN connection, enter your username and password and connect!

What are the 5 main benefits of using a VPN?

1) Anonymity
2) Security
3) Privacy
4) Bypass censorship
5) Saving Costs

What is the difference between a web proxy and a VPN?

Web proxies are often designed for web filtering and are designated (on LANS) by a WPAD file provided by a DHCP or are directly configured in the web browser. They redirect all traffic through another server for logging, filtering, security and compliance. These are fairly easy to defeat so it's not wise to use them. An inline device is trickier to defeat but does introduce a single point of failure for internet traffic. Proxies do not always, if ever, encrypt traffic.A VPN secures two end points of a network by using header or payload encryption. A site-to-site VPN looks logically like a directly connected network even though it often traverses a variety of networks. This is used for security and connecting disparate networks.

Will a VPN slow down my internet connection?

It all depends on the VPN location you connect to.
We advice connecting to a VPN server that's closest to your own country:

For example, a person from Germany should best connect to our VPN server in The Netherlands, while a person in Mexico can better connect to a VPN server 1 of our locations in the United States.

Can I watch TV shows and movies behind your VPN?

Yes you can still watch your favorite TV shows and movies.

What will my ISP see when I'm connected to your VPN?

The only thing that your ISP will see is a connection that is made to 1 of our VPN servers. They cannot decipher the traffic as the connection is fully encrypted. Your privacy remains untouched.

In which countries do you have servers?

Instant VPN can currently offer her VPN services in 2 continents:

Europe, The Netherlands, Alblasserdam
United States, Texas, Dallas

More locations will be coming soon...

Why do I need a VPN?

What is the difference between PPTP, L2TP and openVPN?

PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) is a good, lightweight VPN protocol offering basic online security with fast speeds. PPTP is built-in to a wide array of desktop and mobile devices and features 128-bit encryption. PPTP is a good choice if OpenVPN isn't available on your device and speed is top priority.

L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) with IPsec (IP Security) is a very secure protocol built-in to a wide array of desktop and mobile devices. L2TP/IPsec features 256-bit encryption, but the extra security overhead requires more CPU usage than PPTP. L2TP/IPsec is an excellent choice if OpenVPN is not available on your device, but you want more security than PPTP.

OpenVPN is the premier VPN protocol designed for modern broadband networks, but is not supported by mobile devices and tablets. OpenVPN features 256-bit encryption and is extremely stable and fast over networks with long distances and high latency. It provides greater security than PPTP and requires less CPU usage than L2TP/IPsec.

OpenVPN is the recommended protocol for desktops, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Which VPN protocol is best for me?

Due to the major security flaws, there is no good reason to choose PPTP other than device compatibility. If you have a device on which neither L2TP/IPsec or OpenVPN is supported then it may be a reasonable choice. If quick setup and easy configuration are a concern then L2TP/IPsec should be considered.L2TP/IPSec is an excellent choice but falls slightly short of OpenVPN's high performance and excellent stability. If you are using a mobile device running iOS (iPhone) or Android then it is the fastest to setup and configure as it is supported natively (no software to install), however we feel this should not be an important consideration.

OpenVPN is the best choice for all platforms. It is extremely fast, secure and reliable. Additionally, the IVPN multihop network is only available when connecting via OpenVPN. The only minor downside is the requirement to install a 3rd party client but on most platforms this only takes a few minutes.

Do I need to open any special ports on my firewall?

You should not need to open any special ports on your firewall on most computers or devices.
OpenVPN uses port 443, PPTP uses port 1723 and L2TP uses port 1701. Most systems have this port opened by default.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 51' message?

Error 51: "Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem"

Cause: A Cisco VPN client reports this error when the local service is not running or the client is not connected to a network. Restarting the VPN service and/or troubleshooting the local network connection often fixes this problem.

Solution: Double check your internet settings to make sure you can connect to the internet before making a connection to our VPN.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 412' message?

Error 412: "The remote peer is no longer responding"

Cause: A Cisco VPN client reports this error when an active VPN connection drops due to network failure, or when a firewall is interfering with access to required ports.

Solution: If you are using wireless, try to connect with a cable.
If that doesn't work, turn off your firewall, see if you are able to connect then. If so, configure your firewall to permit UDP ports 500 and 62515. These are required for Cisco VPN client.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 619' message?

Error 619: "A connection to the remote computer could not be established"

Cause: A firewall or port configuration issue is preventing the VPN client from making a working connection even though the server can be reached.

Solution: Make sure to check your firewall settings or router to make sure it allows a VPN connection.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 691' message?

Error 691: "Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain"

Cause: You may have entered the wrong username or password when attempting to authenticate to a Windows VPN. For computers part of a Windows domain, the logon domain must also be correctly specified.

Solution: Make sure you entered the correct username and password as mentioned in the welcome e-mail we have sent.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 720' message?

Error 720: "No PPP control protocols configured"

Cause: On a Windows VPN, this error occurs when the client lacks sufficient protocol support to communicate with the server.

Solution: Rectifying this problem requires identifying which VPN protocols the server can support and installing a matching one on the client via Windows Control Panel.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 721' message?

Error 721: "The remote computer did not respond"

Cause: A Microsoft VPN reports this error when failing to establish a connection, similar to the error 412 reported by Cisco clients.

Solution: If you are using wireless, try to connect with a cable.
If that doesn’t work, turn off your firewall, see if you are able to connect then. If so, configure your firewall to permit UDP ports 500 and 62515. These are required for Cisco VPN client.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 732, 734 or 812' message?

Error 732, 734 or 812: "The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server"

Cause: On Windows VPNs, the user attempting to authenticate a connection may have insufficient access rights.

Solution: A network administrator must resolve this problem by updating the user's permissions. In some cases, the administrator may need to update MS-CHAP (authentication protocol) support on the VPN server. Any of these three error codes may apply depending on the network infrastructure involved.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 800' message?

Error 800: "Unable to establish connection"

Cause: This can happen if the VPN server is not properly connected to the network, the network is temporarily down, or if the server or network is overloaded with traffic. The error also occurs if the VPN client has incorrect configuration settings. Finally, the local router may be incompatible with the type of VPN being used and require a router firmware update.

Solution: Make sure to check your internet connection and VPN settings to make sure all is setup correctly.

Why do I receive a VPN 'error 806' message?

Error 806: "A connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established but the VPN connection cannot be completed"

Cause: This error indicates a router firewall is preventing some VPN protocol traffic between client and server.

Solution: Most commonly, it is TCP port 1723 (PPTP) that is at issue and must be opened by the appropriate network administrator. If you are connecting using L2TP, make sure port 1701 is open.
